SWIM: 1 MILE

After year-long hiatus, it's back to the pool. I had an SVT issue that needed attention and it took longer than I thought to find the motivation to get back into a routine. This long, hard, ugly winter didn't help any. I have a solid 1-mile base to build on. Current time to complete is about 1hr/15min...need to shave about 30min off that time for OWS season.

WALK: 4.47k

Sunny and 60's...perfect weather for training along the lake! Didn't stretch before today's walk and I felt it, but I did notice that my hip and lower back felt better. Hopefully I'll be able to turn this walk into a light jog in the near future. Looking forward to receiving my new wetsuit in the mail.

WALK: 3.97k

Another great walk today. Lower back felt a little better than last tme, but I did notice a new pain in my right hip. Not sure if these are really just kinks I'll have to work out over time, or if they're related to my knee injury. My hip better not be starting to go...way too young for that nonsense!

I'm thinking about dropping my Y membership. The money I save can purchase the equivalent of two new (higher-end) wet-suits a year. That would get me more open water training time, which would make a big difference on race days. By trading my Nov-Mar pool time for additional bike and run time, I could also build a stronger fitness base to improve on. It's easier to motivate myself to step out my front door for a swim/bike/run when it's convenient for me than it is to coordinate swim time between multiple competing schedules...especially when I have to fight for a lane. Yep...easy decision.

WALK (not run): 2.92k

This was my first run/walk of the season and it went much better than I expected. When I started training for Traverse City in 2011, I remember taking nearly a month to build up to this distance. Most of my discomfort during today's training was in my lower back...not my knee. That should work itself out over time. Looking back, I might have jumped the gun too soon after my surgeries. Now that my knee has had time to heal, I may actually be able to do this without pain and regret afterwards.

SWIM: 1.5k (P)

Today's swim went MUCH better, in spite of not feeling well. I have a constant sharp pain near the (slightly right of) center of my abdomen. It hurts more when I take a deep breath and seems to shoot up my esophagus...hope is goes away soon.

SWIM: 1k (P)

After several weeks of procrastination and excuses, I finally got back in the pool. It was like starting all over again...last year's 1k warm-up is now this year's total workout.  No worries, I'll catch up soon enough.

New Goal: Be "open-water ready" by early June.

MY OPEN WATER RACES FOR 2013

Haven't been in the pool since October.  With another class starting, kids going back to school and starting a new job, there just wasn't enough time.  Now that things have settled down and the holiday season is over, I can get back into good habits.

Here are two races I'm targeting for the 2013 open water season....

The Motor City Mile
July 10, 2013
Belle Isle, MI
This is a 1-mile open water swim in the Detroit River

FOPP OWS
August 10, 2013
Alpena, MI
This is a 1/2-mile and 1-mile race in Presque Isle Harbor (Lake Huron)...pending water temps and weather, I'll be doing the 1-mile
